can you get high from eating weed

Before we answer the question Can you get High from Eating Weed, let’s walk you through a little scenario first…

You’re sitting in the back of a car with a bag of weed and suddenly, you hear a siren and see some flashing lights. The driver of the vehicle turns to you and says, “Eat it!” It’s not too much weed, about a half an ounce, so you start munching away at the raw weed.

The driver laughs a bit and says, “Man, you’re gonna be so high!”

The question is, can you get high from eating weed?

Can You Get High From eating Weed – Raw Weed

Can you get High from Eating Weed
In the above-mentioned scenario, you won’t really be able to get ‘high’. This is because irrespective of the amount of cannabis you consume in its raw form, the THC [psychoactive ingredient] within the cannabis isn’t activated.

In other words, the THC is not psychoactive. In order to make the THCa [its current form] into THC, you will need to apply heat. This process is known as decarboxylation.

If the THCa is not converted to THC, you can literally eat as much as you’d like without feeling euphoric. Your stomach, however, might get a little upset.

The raw plant matter isn’t the easiest thing to digest and you might have some issues with indigestion throughout the day, however, you won’t get high.

Can You Get High From eating weed? – What about Brownies?

If you’ve ever eaten a brownie, you’ll know that the associated high can be quite intense. This is because of two reasons.

  1. The THC within the brownie has been activated, thus making it psychoactive
  2. THC processed in the liver turns 9-Delta-THC into 11-Hydroxy-THC which is 10x more potent.

When making cannabis edibles, you first have to make a cannabis infusion. This could be cannabutter or cannaoil, depending on your preference. To make the infusion, you’re always first instructed to decarboxylate the THC by placing it on an oven tray for a good 15 minutes while baking it at roughly 200º Fahrenheit.  This activates the psychoactive properties of the cannabis.

However, if this wasn’t enough, your liver helps in making the experience even more intense. This is because when the liver tries to break down 9-delta-tetrahydrocannabinol, it turns it into 11-hydroxy-tetrahydrocannabinol which has psychoactive properties 10 times stronger than delta-9-THC.

Considering that the ‘high’ associated with an edible takes roughly 45 mins to an hour to ‘hit’, many first-time cannabis consumers make the mistake of overdosing on brownies.

Don’t worry about the term “overdose”. Cannabis cannot induce a lethal dose. Overdosing on cannabis simply means you’re in for a unique and intense experience bordering psychedelic.

A good night’s rest will set everything back to normal. Simply remember to wait at least an hour to an hour and a half prior to increasing your dose of edibles. The psychedelic side of marijuana can be quite startling to people who usually expect a mellow high associated with cannabis.

Nonetheless, now you should know the answer to the question, “can you get high from eating weed?”

The short answer – Yes if the THC is activated. No, in its raw form.
