You just bought a nice fresh baggy of cannabis and you’re wondering – How long is weed good for? It’s a good question because knowing how to properly store your cannabis might give you a longer shelf-life. This is especially true for those who don’t consume cannabis as regularly as others do.
Today, we’ll be going over a few tips on how to preserve your weed for longer and the average shelf life expectancy of a bag of weed.
How to Ensure Your Weed Lasts Longer
Before we jump into how long is weed good for, let’s first talk about how to properly store your cannabis.
The cannabis that you buy, if it is premium quality, went through the process of being dried and cured. This means, that it’s already a month or two old when you get it in your hands. This is important to understand because it will affect the time it takes for the cannabis to “go bad”.
There are many things that can happen with your bag of weed including;
- Developing mold
- Losing potency
- Becoming too dry
In order to avoid this from happening, it’s important to know how to properly store your cannabis to make it last longer.
Firstly, you’ll never want to store it in a plastic bag. Many people buy their weed in Ziploc bags. While this is okay for immediate transfer, ideally you’ll want to store it in a hermetically sealed jar.
The jar will maintain ideal conditions and won’t let the weed dry out or mold. You’ll want to store the jar in a dark place away from light. Light breaks down the THC and reduces the potency over time. Thus, we recommend you store it in a dark place.
DO NOT store it in the fridge. The change in temperature will also break down the THC molecule faster. We recommend keeping it in a drawer or closet within your hermetically sealed jar.
If the cannabis is too wet when you buy it, we recommend continuing to cure it a bit more. To cure it, you simply will remove the lid of the jar twice a day for about fifteen minutes and allow the excess moisture to evaporate.
In the case that the weed is too dry, you’ll take a small cotton ball, soak it in water and leave it within the jar and your weed for about an hour or two. The moisture will go to the weed and rehydrate the bud.
You don’t want to do this for too long as you might promote mold development.
How Long is Weed Good For?
If you are following the practices above, you will be able to make your cannabis last for about six months to roughly nine months.
If you bought concentrates, weed can last you for more than a year without going “off”. Similarly, with oils and the likes, you’ll be able to get at least a year out of it before it starts going “off”.
